My third graders were so engaged with this! One student, who usually has a hard time with most “work,” really got into it, was frustrated at one point for not being able to share his idea/equation, then bounced back rapidly to meet the next task of using the next number of blocks. I loved the reaction of yet another student who thought he could not do one with just 5 blocks (“I give up!”), explored and succeeded in using 6 blocks, and then found out he could use just 5 blocks. Thank you, Dan!
