What are the aims and goals of math education, K-2?

As part of the Math for Future Elementary School Teachers class we’re teaching at the UW, we regularly ask our students to reflect on what they’re learning in the class. This particular student reflection felt so dense and comprehensive that I thought it would be worth sharing here (with her permission, and her name removed).

The prompt: What do you think are the aims and goals of math education for grades K-2? Include topics, values, and outcomes.

    As I see this post, this was a good place to share my ideas about goals of math education, K-2. Because I am aware of some concepts of common core math practices that adopts to each grade students, the chart above can be the resource for me compare with my knowledge towards K-2 math education. In grade 2, students are extensive of understanding math conceptual concepts such as base-ten units and fluent with addition and subtraction and more other topics. What I mostly want to talk about these age range kids is about base ten units and place value. There are able to count up to 1000 and started to interpret each place value with hundreds, tens, or ones. Furthermore, they started to develop fluency with addition and subtraction with large numbers. Because they are in process of learning math and gaining knowledge, I believe the aim for grade 2 students is to guide them with the proper education. What I mean my proper education is that rather than giving them a bunch of problem sets, what instructor need to do is to teach them with reasoning and promoting critical thinking. For example, in the classroom while having discussion, students usually do know actually give reasoning for why we are learning associative or distributive property unless we bring the idea into the classroom topic. If students learn those reasons or fully interpret conceptual understanding, it would be better to discuss those topics in the university. By looking at the situation, I realized how early childhood learning determines the future learning. Also rather than solving problems a lot, knowing the concepts and methods is more important thing to do.
