“You’ve woken up in an empty room. There’s nothing in it except for one door. There’s a keypad on the side of the door with a button that reads +3, and another that reads +7. There’s a larger screen over the door that reads 101. There’s nothing else in the room. How can you escape?”
Room Escape is a phenomenally compelling lesson structure that’s also endlessly adaptable and extendable. It’s simple to make easier and harder versions. Moreover, there’s a first layer of the problem that is usually quite accessible to students (how do you make the target number with the buttons?), that leads to a more mathematically subtle question (what are all the ways to make the target? How do you know you have them all?).
